There're four types of worlds you encounter. They all look pretty similar, so there's not much variation. The graphics themselves are good though. You don't play a game like this for sightseeing, anyways – you won’t have the time.

With a constant barrage of fire, you should be half-deaf after a few minutes. Not with Outbound, though. It's smooth and nice. Music is very ambient and fades into the background easily.

Gameplay

Gameplay is fairly addictive. It is also very difficult. Those two are the big plus and the big minus in my view. The game's fun, although you shouldn't start a mission unless you have some time to spend on it, and you should prepare not to get too upset when you lose.

In Outbound, a strategy game of considerable difficulty, you must fight your way through a few levels spanning amazing volumes of land with a huge virtual army standing in your way. Reinventing the term ‘commando’, Outbound shows you the reality of a lone wolf fighting the masses: adapt to the fight always going on, always becoming harder, or perish. With few allies (when any), your robot-like machine will have little in the way of help – Outbound’s not a game for those with a weak heart or those who aren’t able to concentrate. The missions are long and hard – you are likely to have to restart due to failiure after considerable time invested… but still, I find myself thinking the risk is worth it. High risk, high reward – Outbound makes you realise success isn’t something doled out every 10 minutes, it’s something you earn and relish.

The game itself is excellent, it sports several different methods of attack and a nice arsenal of enemies barring the way between you and your mission. The missions themselves offer a fair amount of diversity in their objectives, although the fighting itself remains much the same. A constant underdog against the mass, you will also have to face the fact that most missions are of really gigantic proportions as said before.

Overall, Outbound is worth a shot for anyone who likes action, thinks he has a quick mind and a quicker hand, and has enough time to really enjoy it.

Engine:
Outbound’s engine stands out in no particular way, and is detracted in no particular way. Average in most things, its single most distinguishing feature is perhaps the weaponry. Providing different projectile types that can cross different terrain, you need to be quick on your feet and know what you’re doing – and where you’re safe from what. Whether missiles that seek you out almost anywhere and energy bolts that don’t – you have what it takes to counter it if you use it well. The allies you can get in some missions are a bonus feature too (and a clever but simple way of handling minions), where they simply follow you around and attack anything you target with your laser-sighting. Another thing that’s fairly inventive is for example the fourth mission, where you must defend a perimeter with placements of mines and turrets before the onslaught begins.

Average is the word, and average is the grade.

Sound & Music:
Again, pretty average. The sounds are well implemented though, with such a constant barrage of enemy and friendly fire, you should be rights be half-deaf and very tired of the sounds after a few minutes. Outbound pulls it off alright though, it’s smooth and nice and doesn’t stab needles at your brain. Music is very ambient and fades into the background easily, but it provides the necessary mood for the game. Okay job.

Graphics:
Graphics are pretty good. There are four basic types of worlds you encounter: Earth-like, Mars-like, iceworld and desertworld. Most of these share pretty similar graphics, altered somewhat – so you wont experience a lot of variations. The graphics themselves are good though, so I have no beef with that – the arena you fight in looks good enough for playing – im happy. In a game like this, you aren’t on the ride for sightseeing anyway – you won’t have the time. ;)

Bottom-line is: the gameplay is good enough for the me to decide to review it for Freehare, so it’s good enough to try. I don’t like games with bad gameplay, so I don’t review them. :P

Just don’t expect an easy ride – even mechanical Star-Wars type walking robots can have a bumpy ride when fighting an army!

In conclusion:
Outbound is a great albeit difficult game. That’s the way I like them. It’s consistent in its slightly-above-average quality – having few detriments aside from difficulty and a unique atmosphere. This is a game I played religiously for a while once upon a time, and it wouldn’t surprise me if I will again. For those who just want to forget themselves in the middle of the melee – Outbound will bring that melee to you.
